Mexico Visa information

Visa Requirements

Documents required:

  • A Mexico tourist visa is required, which issues a short stay of up to 180 days (can be used for single or multiple entries). This will be needed by those entering Mexico for tourism, business, a visit, or any other purposes that does not require employment.
  • Also known as the Forma Migratoria Múltiple(FMM), the Mexico Tourist Card is a mandatory requirement for all South Africans entering Mexico by air or via a land border checkpoint. You can apply for this online or get it on the airplane on the way there and must present it upon arrival in Mexico.
  • Documents required:
    • Completed Visa Application form (this must be filled in online, printed and signed). The original application form must be taken with to the Embassy for your appointment.
    • A valid South African passport. This must be valid for at least 6 months from the time you enter Mexico and must have at least 2 blank pages where the visa will be affixed.
    • A clear copy of your passport. This must include the biographical data page, as well as all used pages, including previous Schengen and non-Schengen visas, as well as all the pages that have been stamped.
    • 2 x recent colour passport photo. Please note that this cannot be older than 3 months and cannot have been previously used. Guidelines for the photo – size must be 35mm x 45mm, there should be no smiling, no teeth showing, and no obstructions to the face. Hair must be pushed back and there must be no shadows. The background must be white or very light.
    • Proof of visa fee payment.
    • Cover letter addressed to the Mexico embassy (explain why you are travelling, what you are doing, dates etc.).
    • Round-trip flight itinerary (must show proof that you are leaving Mexico).
    • Proof of financial means. This would come in the form of your 3-month bank statements (the latest) which must have the original bank stamp on each page. You need to have enough available funds in your account to prove that you can support yourself whilst in Mexico.
    • Proof of accommodation. This could be in the form of a hotel reservation/voucher or confirmation of booking from your place of accommodation. Each guest name must reflect clearly on these, and it must show proof of accommodation for every night in Mexico.
    • Proof of invitation by the friend/relative you are staying with (including their passport and residence permit in Mexico).
    • Employment status documents:
      • If employed: Letter from the company confirming your position, the time that you will be absent, and that they do not object to your absence.
      • If a student: A letter from your educational institution confirming your enrolment and providing details of your course.
      • If self-employed: Investment certificates, property deeds, commercial registration etc.
    • If travelling to attend a short-term study course (less than 180 days):
      • Acceptance letter from the educational institution.
      • Proof that you can afford the tuition and living costs or provide proof of a scholarship.
    • If travelling for business or you have been invited by an organisation:
      • Original invitation or sponsorship letter, including your full name, the company’s name and registration number, what activity you will be doing in Mexico and your estimated time you will be spending in the country.
      • Copy of the ID of the person signing the letter.
      • Bank statements from the last 12-months of the company sponsoring you (if applicable).
